The Norden bombsight is arguably one of the most important technological advancements to come out of WWII. WWII Artificial Horizon

WWII Artificial Horizon, also known as an altitude indicator, is an instrument used in an aircraft to inform the pilot of the orientation of the aircraft relative to the earth.  It uses an internal gyroscope to establish an inertial platform to indicate pitch, bank and yaw and was a primary instrument for flight in certain weather conditions.  This example is cylindrical in shape, measuring 6.5 inches in length by 4.25 inches in diameter.  Original aircraft type is unknown, but could easily be researched.  Stenciled boldly in red on opposite sides of the instrument is the legend "DO NOT JAR - HANDLE LIKE EGGS" as a reminder to any mechanic who might have to replace one.  A great aviation relic and stark reminder of "flying by the seat of your pants" during air combat of WWII.
